Cosmology Group

The New NLO Cosmology Group

This group is designed to inform, enthuse and enlighten anyone with an interest in Cosmology and hopefully the meetings will stimulate much discussion and questions.

This friendly group was started in September 2019 by Leigh Edwards and is open to all levels from beginners to experts and contributions from anyone are welcome.

Typically meetings will be held on the fourth Tuesday of every month. Since Covid, meetings have been held exclusively on Zoom, but from 2023 we hope to be able to get back to a joint face-to-face meeting with Zoom for those that can’t make it in person.

Meetings start at 7pm with an initial “beginners” session, followed by a round-up of Cosmology news items from the scientific press from the last month. This is followed by either a presentation from a member or an open discussion. Everybody is welcome.

Some of the topics discussed over the last couple of years were: Age of the Universe – how is it measured? Dark energy and dark matter – how do we know they exist and how are they quantified? Lots of discussions on Black Holes.

Future topics of discussion: James Webb Space Telescope discoveries, Einstein and relativity, Black holes, Quantum physics and its relationship to the universe, the nature of Time, the Big Bang, and the final fate of the Universe.
